‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Gets the Green Light From Netflix

Squid Game, which tapped into our societal dystopia and became Netflix’s most-watched series ever, has gotten the green light for a second season. In a letter to fans, show creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that “a whole new round is coming,” before tossing out some breadcrumbs for what the next installment may entail.

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year,” Hwang began. “But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director, and producer of Squid Game, a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.”

Hwang then confirmed that leading man Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) will return, as will his masked adversary, the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). “The man in the suit with ddakji might be back,” he teased, referencing the mysterious recruiter. And at least one new character has been created: “You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.” Fans of the series may recall that Young-hee is the haunting animatronic doll that leads the deadly game of “Red Light, Green Light” in the show’s first episode.

Speculation about a second season has persisted since Squid Game’s premiere last September. The survival thriller about cash-strapped characters who are lured into fighting each other via deadly children’s games for a cash prize is in the midst of an historic awards campaign, which could see the show rack up Emmys before its sophomore season.

“Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again,” Hwang told Vanity Fair of season 2, which he expects could be released by the end of 2023 or 2024. “I want to ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?’” he continued, suggesting that if the characters had joined forces during the competition, “there could have been a possibility that we could have seen more winners.”
