Arsenal vs Chelsea result: Gabriel Jesus scores again in dominant derby display

Arsenal’s magical preseason continued with a sensational 4-0 result against London rivals Chelsea in a match played in front of a record crowd in Orlando’s Camping World Stadium. Four different players found the back of the net for Arsenal, while it was another in a series of disappointing preseason displays for the Blues, who clearly have work to do.

The Gunners were all over Chelsea from the opening whistle with aggressive and direct play and the tone was set by center forward Gabriel Jesus who scored the opening goal after Chelsea were turned over in their own half. A similar quick-fire move led to Martin Odegaard’s strike as Arsenal entered halftime up 2-0.

Chelsea changed its formation back to its customary 3-4-3 to start the second half and things looked better early on, but they could not find a goal as the scoring troubles of last year continued to haunt the Blues.

Instead, following a host of subs made by both clubs, it was Arsenal which found the net twice more with more aggressive, fast-paced attacks. Saka pounced on a rebound after two straight saves by Chelsea ‘keeper Edouard Mendy, and an unmarked Sambi Lokonga headed home a long cross as Chelsea were outmatched.

It’s now a perfect five wins in five for Arsenal during what has been an impressive preseason run. The other victories have included wins over Ipswich Town, Nurnberg, Everton and Orlando City. They will play Sevilla on Saturday, July 30, at Emirates Stadium in London to close out the summer tuneup schedule.

Chelsea were coming off a disappointing 1-1 draw against MLS expansion side Charlotte FC in midweek and they needed a late goal just to beat Mexican side Club America before that. Their final preseason match is at Italian side Udinese next Friday.

94th min.: Goal Arsenal! Sambi Lokonga rounds out a dominant derby display. And it was an easy goal for Arsenal: A long cross from Cedric Soares is headed home at the far post. The Gunners didn’t let up until final whistle.

92nd min.: Chelsea ‘keeper Edouard Mendy with a fantastic save on an Arsenal set piece to avoid a fourth goal.

85th min.: Great challenge by Kalidou Koulibaly on a Nicolas Pepe run into the box. Impressive from the Chelsea debutant.

70th min.: A record crowd was on hand for this London derby.

66th min.: Arsenal goal! The Gunners pepper Edouard Mendy. First it was Martinelli with a shot, then Xhaka with a fierce followup shot that’s saved, and Bukayo Saka cleaned it up and put home the rebound.

64th min.: Chelsea SUBS — Hakim Ziyech is on for Mason Mount while Michy Batshuayi replaces Kai Havertz.

62nd min.: Reece James and Nuno Tavares go nose-to-nose after a challenge and Granit Xhaka gets himself in the mix (of course).

57th min.: Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Jesus both go down with cramps but only one will be substituted. It’s Eddie Nketiah for Jesus. Humid night in Orlando taking its toll.

52nd min.: Chelsea have looked a lot more comfortable and Arsenal have started in their own half. Marcos Alonso missed a header in the box and Malang Sarr ripped a shot high. The formation change has paid early dividends.

46th min.: Chelsea SUBS — Pulisic, Azpilicueta, Alonso, Kovacic come into the match for Werner, Sterling, Emerson and Gallagher. Chelsea is moving back to a 3-4-3 formation.

Arsenal SUB — Nuno Tavares for Oleksandr Zinchenko is the only change for the Gunners.

49th+ min.: Mason Mount rips a shot off the left post! That would’ve been a welcome goal from a Chelsea side which is on its heels.

43rd min.: Another Reece James cross and this one is deflected to force Aaron Ramsdale into a punch. Meanwhile Trevoh Chalobah has picked up an injury and can’t continue. Malang Sarr will replace him.

39th min.: Best chance of the game for Chelsea and Reece James fizzes a low ball across the Arsenal six-yard box. No one is there to put it home and it goes to waste.

36th min.: Another Arsenal goal! Great ball by Martinelli to Odegaard who made the run between defenders and into the Chelsea box. And he wasted no time to rip a shot past Mendy. This is domination from Arsenal. Chelsea look lost and stunned.

34th min.: There’s been nothing from Chelsea. Raheem Sterling dishes a hopeful ball forward for Kai Havertz, but that was easy pickings for the Arsenal backline.

31st min.: Gabriel Martinelli is needing treatment for an injured left wrist coming after a cross that saw him fall on it. They’re taping it up and it looks like he’ll continue.

28th min.: Reports from the stadium is that Thomas Tuchel was not happy with his players during the hydration break.

20th min.: It’s been all Arsenal so far. A Martin Odegaard free kick is tipped over the bar by Edouard Mendy. And the ensuing corner kick is headed over by Gabriel.

15th min.: Goal Arsenal! After a poor Chelsea giveaway, Granit Xhaka intercepts and immediately feeds Gabriel Jesus and he applies the delightful chip over Edouard Mendy. What a cool finish, and another preseason goal for Gabriel Jesus who’s been lighting it up in preseason for the Gunners.

6th min.: Chance for Arsenal! Just moments after William Saliba stuffed Timo Werner on one end., Arsenal broke forward with Martinelli feeding Saka and his shot was stopped by Edouard Mendy.

5th min.: Arsenal are on the front foot. Gabriel Jesus is standing out for roaming all over the field. He’s committed and staying busy early on.

1st min.: We’re off in Orlando. Raheem Sterling committing the early foul on Gabriel Jesus and Arsenal get a set piece to start, but nothing comes of it.

120 mins from kickoff: We could see a Kalidou Koulibaly debut for Chelsea, while Oleksandr Zinchenko will start for Arsenal. For Zinchenko’s sake we hope it’s better than his first attempt at singing in a Gunners kit.

Manager Mikel Arteta reverts to a lineup that has the look of the club’s starting XI with Aaron Ramsdale in goal over Matt Turner and new arrival Oleksandr Zinchenko immediately thrust into the lineup ahead of Nuno Tavares.

Kieran Tierney, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Emile Smith Rowe and newcomer Fabio Vieira are not in the squad as they recover from injury. Lucas Torreira has not featured as reports indicate he is likely set for a move away from the club.
