With rumors of Washington Nationals superstar Juan Soto being on the trading block, New York Mets fans are going all in on the idea of giving the Nats whatever they want for the 23-year-old slugger. Should such a blockbuster go down, things will seriously be looking up in Queens for the first time since 2015.
But there’s another acquisition that already went down that has Metropolitans fans buzzing, and that’s the trade for designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach. The Mets announced the move on Friday, sending right-handed reliever Colin Holderman to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Vogelbach, who is expected to platoon at the DH position with J.D. Davis.
Vogelbach first saw action on Sunday Night Baseball, with the Mets looking to avoid a sweep against the visiting San Diego Padres. His debut was a solid one, with Vogelbach picking up one hit, one walk and, most importantly, one run scored. And by God was it one majestic run scored by this big beefy boy (Vogelbach is 6-feet tall and weighs 270 lbs.):
The big fella rumbles, bumbles and stumbles so beautifully that he belongs on a NFL field with Chris Berman commentating his highlights on the two-minute drill. We don”t get many earthquakes on the east coast but it sure felt like there was one when Vogelbach rounded third and headed for home at Citi Field on Sunday night.
Now that Vogelbach is on a contender, and one that just so happens to be a New York-based team, we can expect to see a lot more of these highlights. Those of us who don’t follow the Pittsburgh Pirates closely (everyone outside of Pittsburgh) have been missing out on this absolute unit:
