NYC Weather: City Braces For ‘Dangerous’ Heatwave

NEW YORK CITY — Get ready for a scorcher of a week, New York City.

A heat advisory takes effect Wednesday at noon and will last until 8 p.m. as temperatures and humidity reach potentially dangerous levels, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat index Wednesday will be between 95 and 100 degrees, which state officials warned New Yorkers could be dangerously hot.

“The next several days will bring extreme heat throughout the state with dangerous heat indices potentially reaching into the 100s,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

“The effects of high heat and humidity over the course of a few days create dangerous conditions that can lead to heat stress and illness,” added Jackie Bray, New York State’s Emergency Services commissioner. “If you choose to exercise or have to work outside, try to do so in the early morning or evening hours when the sun is down, and temperatures are not as extreme.”

Tuesday won’t be quite that hot, but it’ll still be a sweaty, sweltering day, according to the forecast.

Highs Tuesday will hit 92 degrees, the forecast states.

Consolidated Edison sent some New Yorkers Monday afternoon a heatwave alert which they promised to monitor should it cause power outages.

ConEd urged New Yorkers to limit energy use when possible.

The expected heat wave — which will be the second this year, after the scorching stretch between July 12 and 14, according to AccuWeather — could be dangerous for seniors and people with chronic health problems or mental health conditions, the advisory states.

“Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures,” the advisory states. “Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning.”

The city’s cooling centers opened Tuesday at 9 a.m., according to an NYC Emergency Management tweet.

New Yorkers can visit the city’s “Beat The Heat” page or call 311 for cooling center locations.
