Olivia Rodrigo got an entire crowd to sing “Fuck You” to the Supreme Court on Saturday, just two days after the Court released the Dobbs decision ending Roe v. Wade. The singer was just one of a handful of artists who brought abortion rights to the Glastonbury stage over the weekend.
Rodrigo, who previously spoke out against the leaked Dobbs decision draft in May, invited Lily Allen to join her onstage Saturday to perform her hit single “Fuck You,” with a special dedication to the Supreme Court’s conservative justices. Saying she was “devastated and terrified” by the SCOTUS decision, Rodrigo told the crowd, “So many women and girls are going to die because of this. And I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have shown us that, at the end of the day, they truly don’t give a shit about freedom.” She went on to name Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, and Brett Kavanaugh, who, along with Chief Justice John Roberts, voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. “We hate you,” she added.
The musical protests at Glastonbury started on Friday, when Phoebe Bridgers stopped her performance at the festival to send a message to SCOTUS. “I’m having like the shittiest day,” she said in between songs. “Who wants to say ‘Fuck the Supreme Court’ on three?” After leading the chant, Bridgers called the SCOTUS judges who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade “irrelevant, old motherfuckers trying to tell us what to do with our fucking bodies.” Bridgers publicly spoke about her decision to have an abortion when the Dobbs decision draft was initially leaked in May. “I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour. I went to Planned Parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy,” she tweeted at the time. “Everyone deserves that kind of access.”
Headliner Billie Eilish later added her voice to the chorus of women protesting the decision at the festival. “Today is a very dark day for women in America,” she told the crowd during her Saturday night set, as she introduced “Your Power,” a song about “the concept of power and how we need to always remember not to abuse it.”
Megan Thee Stallion also took a stand during her Glastonbury set. “Texas really embarrassing me right now,” she said, encouraging the crowd to boo. “And I want to have it on the record that the motherfucking hot girls and the hot boys do not support this bullshit that y’all campaigning for.” She then led the crowd in a chant of, “My body, my motherfucking choice!”
Bridgers, Eilish, Meg, and Rodrigo are just a few of the celebrities who have spoken out against the Supreme Court’s decision dismantling Roe v. Wade. Lizzo announced on Saturday that she had pledged $500,000 of money made from her upcoming tour to Planned Parenthood, and that Live Nation had agreed to match the donation. “The most important thing is action & loud voices,” she wrote on Instagram, asking followers to donate to Planned Parenthood and the National Network of Abortion Funds. Meanwhile, Halsey incorporated a new call to activism in her show responding directly to the Supreme Court decision that said in part, “Don’t wait for the revolutionaries to change the world. Be the revolutionaries.”
