Pete Alonso, Starling Marte’s outlook gets scary admission

The New York Mets’ clubhouse is starting to look like an infirmary with all the injured bodies they are nursing. Add to that the pair of Pete Alonso and Starling Marte, who suffered injuries in the second leg of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres Tuesday night.

Mets manager Buck Showalter did not sound too optimistic when he briefly spoke about his initial thoughts on the prospect of the two stars returning to active duty sooner than later.

Via Deesha Thosar of the Daily News:

When asked if, in a best-case scenario, Alonso and Marte will need to miss just a couple of games, Showalter said: “I love your optimism but I don’t share it at this point.” The manager did not say whether he thinks both will need to be placed on the injured list.

The severity of their injuries are yet to be exactly determined, but it shouldn’t be long, as Alonso and Marte both had MRIs after the Mets’ 7-0 loss to San Diego, per Anthony DiComo of  MLB.com.

According to a Mets spokesman, Pete Alonso and Starling Marte both left Petco Park this evening to go for late-night MRIs. As a result, they were unavailable to comment on their injuries.

If anything, the Mets have an ample lead atop the National League East, as their 38-20 record is ahead by eight games over the rest of the field in the division.
